Graphene may be the next biggest thing to electronics

If you are like me, then the word Graphene should be rather foreign to you. See, Graphene is an allotrope of carbon. And it is made by utilizing carbon which is only one atom thick. I have had this story on my computer for over over a week now. But before reporting on such I wanted to find out as much as I could about this subject before talking about it.

As I have stated here all too much lately, our technology is making advances at near light speed. Norwegian University of Science and Technology's (NTNU for short) professor, Helge Weman, does not see this as a new product but simply a new production method for semiconductor devices. See, they have constructed nano-wires grown from sheets of graphene instead of silicon.

Anyone, who is like me, should see this as a major advancement in semiconductors-- a more sustainable advancement if you ask me. Our earth is literally blanked with carbon laid down by the carboniferous period millions of years ago. Plus all of the chemicals that we now use to process silicon and other such things that we make semiconductors from are rather toxic to our environment.

But the reason this is such an advancement for the semiconductor industry is that photo voltaics made from graphene are rather flexible. This will allow PV makers to make the first flexible solar panel! Just think about it for a moment-- people that have tiled roofs like what is common in the southwest could finally be able to install this flexible solar panel on their roofs. The possibilities are virtually endless!

So graphene is the newest and latest thing to hit the solar market and semiconductors in general. I cannot wait to see what graphene brings to us!
