The Valley of 10,000 smokes?

June marks the month that the state of the Alaska experienced what was known as the valley of ten thousand smokes. It happens that the Alaska was rocked by volcanic eruptions. So next month marks the centennial of this occurrence-- the valley was actually established in June of 1912.

Now protected as Katmai National Park and Preserve, this park sits atop what was coined as the valley of the thousand smokes. The name was predominantly given to it because of the many cracks and fissures through which gave rise to its name.

Elsewhere throughout Alaska this year the state will hold a series of talks about the significance and its unusual geologic makeup. Plus there will be a movie screened about the Valley in September of this year in Anchorage.
