GE's LED new lightblub looks and feels like traditional incandescent bulbs!

Yes, you read that correctly. While Philips has been getting all of the attention for their new LED lightbulb, which was the only entrant to the Federal Government's contest, GE has managed to make their own.

They were able to do so by tapping into Austin-based Nuventix, and used their SynJet technology to cool this bulb. See that has been the problem with LED lights-- they were unable to find a way to cool them up until now. As Nuventix's SynJet name implies it creates a synthetic jet out of a heat dissipating oscillating membrane. Neventix has been in the game of thermal management for electronics for quite a while now, so they were a perfect fit for GE's LED lightbulb.

GE and Nuventix were both worried about space. As traditional LED bulbs do not come in a compact size, that is until now. They were both focused on making an A-19 shaped LED lightbulb. And they have done quite the job of it as can be seen here:

What you see here is a mercury free 27 watt replacement for a 100 watt bulb. But now that they have figured out how to cool the bulb there are plenty more advancements to come out of such bulb, as they can now apply what they have learned to much bigger bulbs for commercial industries. They seem to have seen the need to supply offices and factories with such technology and will probably do so now. This could be thought of as GE's forward thinking plan if you will-- seize on their current technology for other consumers beyond the household lighting industry.

Now this bulb was officially unveiled May 9th in Las Vegas at the lighting industry’s big annual trade show, Lightfair International. This bulb is set to hit store shelves in the early part of 2013 for those of you that are interested in it. Although GE has not set a price for this bulb just yet, speculators have pinned a price of around $50 dollars on it.
