The Salton Sea landscape upon which it sits was quite difficult for the engineers to deal with. This is because of the fact that the brine which it produces is rich in minerals-- particularly lithium, manganese and zinc. But all of these minerals could be extracted from the brine and used in production of batteries and other energy storage devices. Seems like a win-win type of situation to me!
This plant was renamed after a pioneer in geothermal technology. Thus it was given the name of Featherstone after pioneer John Featherstone. He has been given credit tor founding the Salton Sea Geothermal source. If you want to read more on this, I suggest this article on it, as it covers the Hudson Ranch geothermal powerplant in greater depth.
