Yes you read that correctly, the Obama administration, along with five states has granted approval of a wind farm on the great lakes in the states of Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania. While there are three other states with Great Lakes coastlines – Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin which may become part of the agreement at a later date.
The first stage of the project consists of five to seven turbines in Lake Erie, and are reported to produce between 20 to 30 MW. Now I do not know how much the average person knows about wind energy, turbines and the likes but these must be some massive turbines as the normal turbine put out about 1-5MW each. Five MW is on the high end of the scale by the way.
But such development is not without opposition. Primarily from people who say they (the wind turbines) would destroy the spectacular views. I mean what is up with that? Could someone please leave me a comment on this one?
There is much more to this story, but in the interest of saving time and energy replicating these facts here you should check out this story on the Huffingtonpost.
