According to the EPA document which has been the basis of everything I have written about said plant, the plant is going to house a four story 20,000 sq ft building. Additionally it will include a 2000 sq ft laboratory and a 2000 sq ft warehouse. It will also house a 30,000 gal holding tank. Now what everyone does not know I am somewhat intimately familiar with Honeywell, or as many of you refer to it as I do Allied. I worked out there in 1995 when we expanded the fluorine plant to be the largest at that time in the world. I also worked out there in 1998 on the duf6 experimental plant.
Now according to their plans a 2" and a 12" pipe will supply this new building with the fluorine. Most likely through a pipe bridge. I would think that is the best way to transport this fluorine. Some of you may already be aware but some may not, see fluorine is a highly reactive substance.
As part of this plan a rail spur extension is needed as well. Most likely from the spur on the West side of the existing plant as it sees very little usage these days. I am just postulating about the rail spur being extended from existing one on the plant grounds now. But besides this one postulate the rest is facts taken from this EPA document, which can be found here:Download the PDF document here And here you will find a patent application for a novel production process to make the high purity LiPF6:Novel Production of LiPF6 And yet another patent application for the process of producing Phosphorous Pentaflouride dated September 16, 2010:Phosphorous Pentafluoride Patent Application I am rather disappointed in the news coverage of this story, and I have gone into far greater detail than any news organization has about this plant and its plans.
Now the reason why this plant is so vital to us as a nation is because it will be the first production facility outside of Asia. Now I have extensively searched google for LiPF6 and have found many suppliers of this product in China. As well I have found a supplier in Korea. But to date there is no supplier of LiPF6 in the western hemisphere that I could locate. Why is this so important you might ask-- well the answer is so simple. All of our electronic gadgetry uses Lithium ion batteries and LiPF6 is the major ingredient in these batteries. As well it could be the major ingredient in batteries for cars, trucks, etc in the future. In fact in an upcoming post I will talk about a California company who believes they may have found a way to make Lithium based batteries last longer as well as run cooler.
