Russia's Basalt Industry

I recently viewed a youtube video about how basalt, a volcanic rock is fueling Russia's housing industry. Apparently it is heated and drawn into fibers which are far superior than steel. I can't help but wonder where American industries are on this pioneering technology, even though it has been around since the 1950's in Russia. You cannot tell me that the USA did not know about the Russian's discoveries in this field being as it took place at the height of the Cold War.

One thing about basalt is after it is melted and drawn into fibers it is fireproof. Additionally it is fairly energy efficient as well. And believe it or not they have begun attaching nano fibers to it to affect its nature. I would think basalt is something we should all keep an eye on.
