What even is DG (Distributed Generation)

What even is DG (Distributed Generation) anyway? Distributed generation has been around since electricity has existed. In fact Edison's design (DC or Direct Current) would have required a Distributed Generation scheme to have even worked. This is why Tesla's AC (Alternating Current) scheme was superior to Edson's direct current.

You see the reason why AC was superior to DC was the fact that the voltage could be stepped up to several kilovolts allowing AC electricity to travel great distances. Whereas the DC could not be stepped up at the time (we can now step up DC through the use of power electronic circuits). But the advances in DC power electronics did not start to come along until at least 30 years ago.

So, how does all of this affect you, the consumer? Well I was just reading an article on distributed generation. It seems as though the states in the western one third of our country is set to deploy a large scale of distributed generation. Perhaps I should have pointed out that wind and solar are rather good candidates for DG.
