Solar-thermal startup, Halotechnics may hold the answer

Everyone is most likely aware of the problems with conventional solar panels. First off they cannot produce any power at night. They also suffer from the same fate if it is a cloudy day. But Halotechncis may have that problem solved. And they have done so with glass.

The company has developed new heat storage materials that promise to make solar-thermal power plants more efficient, while also promise to reduce the cost of storing energy from the sun for use when it is most needed.

The materials, which include new mixtures of salts as well as new glass materials, could be the key to making solar-thermal power plants both cheap enough and reliable enough to compete with fossil fuels on a grand scale.

Unlike solar panels which convert the sun's energy directly into electricity, solar-thermal power plants use a large array of mirrors to concentrate the sunlight into a collector which in turn produces steam to drive a turbine. Additionally some solar-thermal power plants are equipped with heat-storage equipment that allows them to generate steam even after the sun goes down.

More information on this process may be fount at this website.
