The city plans to turn its Stanten Island's Fresh Kills Landfill into a wind farm. This site once known for its garbage heap will house 20 MW of wind power soon as the city is soliciting bids for construction and operation of said facility.
Now what gets me I have no idea how they can build a wind farm on a mountain of garbage. They will certainly have to overcome some engineering difficulties to get down to bedrock or the actual land which lies underneath the trash heap, in my opinion. It will be interesting to say the least to see what the bidders come up with.
This is part of New York City's commitment to renewables. Anyone wanting to read more about this should go here.
